Flashback: Goodwood Revival 2014 – the fast and the quirky If
                                    you want a full-on historic
                                    motorcycling event that's both fast
and quirky, go to the UK. We were
                                    digging around in the archives
recently and up popped a gallery
                                    from the colourful and hugely
                                    entertaining Good Revival...from a
                                    decade ago.
                          Enjoy!

As you may know, the Goodwood
estate in the UK hosts two major events a year: the
Festival of Speed and the Revival. The former is a
high-end classic event where one is expected to dress in
very smart gear and is essentially a champagne, diamonds
and bow-tie effort. However the Revival has a bit more ratbag
to it, where you're expected to dress up in 'period' gear,
whether that be General in charge of the WWII Allied
invasion, cook and tea-maker for the
local NAAFI, sixties rocker or mod, or an extra from The Wild
One. At the same time, there's a big
international crew on the track racing historic
motorcycles at a pace that defies logic. It's the sort of event only the Brits can
do...and here are a few highlights. Rockers rule Or maybe it's the mods The aptly-named Gasoline Alley And this is a good time to remember it's all
tongue-in-cheek...the mix of glam and retro laundry
fashion is astonishing... Pit crew are expected to be appropriately attired In fact, everybody is The effort people go to is amazing...1940s and WWII gear
is prominent, while fifties and sixties is good, too Sometimes it's the details that count There is plenty of historic racing. High-profile riders,
Aussie Bob Rosenthal and Kiwi John Woodley, cuddle-up
before gridding-up. They were there to race in an event that proved to be appallingly fast – so much for growing old gracefully! See the AMCN
Bob Rosenthal profile, which mentions Goodwood Revival
2014 And the AMCN John Woodley profile
Another high-profile Aussie rider, Jim Scaysbrook was on
the scene and racing. He has authored a number of
motorcycle racing histories and is publisher of Old
Bike Australasia magazine. Rounding out our Australia section is this...a slouch hat
for the gent, presumably the finest merino in Madame's
wrap, plus nice green and gold livery on the uber-luxury
retro pram It isn't all about bikes, sometimes it has wings (an
early Boeing, by the way) And sometimes it has four wheels (in this case,
Maseratis) Then you get the showbiz influence: Dad's Army
meets...actually, we're not sure, but it looks
fabulous Somewhat more raucous, and scary, is the St
Trinian's memorial marching team In any case, if you're in the neighborhood, make sure you
drop in... Just to prove the racing has teeth, here are some highlights from the 2018 event, when Austrian Herbert Schwab and Australian Troy Corser teamed up to give a 1929 R57 BMW a much sought-after victory: Here is the extensive on-board footage; And some highlights
as Corser wrestles with the monster while giving one
of his competitors a cheeky surprise... More from Goodwood: see our 2022 Festival of
